39. Alice-Miranda In New York by Jacqueline Harvey

Alice-Miranda In New York by Jacqueline Harvey
Published February 2012 Random House

From the publisher:
Alice-Miranda is in bustling New York City. It's a blur of skyscrapers, hot dog carts, chats with zoo animals and classes at Mrs Kimmel's School for Girls, right next to glorious Central Park. Her family's glamorous department store, Highton's on Fifth, has just been renovated but plans for the fabulous re-opening party are going curiously wrong. Is that why Alice-Miranda's father Hugh seems so worried? And why is her new friend Lucinda so shy about inviting Alice-Miranda home?

I think if you look up the word precocious in the dictionary you will see a picture of Alice-Miranda Highton-Smith-Kennington-Jones.  Alice-Miranda is an almost 8 year old, very wealthy, but no the least bit spoilt, good natured, friendly, intelligent, inquisitive and charming girl who, in this book, finds herself in New York for a four week adventure.

Alice-Miranda is a force of nature, and within days of arriving she meets Gus the New York Zoo's polar bear, makes friends with the hot dog vendor, starts a new school, makes new best friends and starts to unravel the mystery of why the Finkelstein's seem to hate the Highton's enough to sabotage their department store re-opening party?

It is a fun series, with the added bonus of a mystery or two thrown in.  This one, being set in New York lets the reader visit all of the wonderful tourist hot spots with Alice-Miranda including Central Park, the MET, Serendipity 3 (home of the famous frozen hot chocolate), Rockefeller Centre, Times Square and even a subway ride.

Alice-Miranda is a great character full of confidence and spunk.  A great character to spend time with.

This is the fifth Alice-Miranda book, but it is a series that does not have to be read in any order.  Each story stands alone.
